Hey boo hey!
💕 Are you buried under your desk? Meaning, do you have piles of papers that just keep piling up?
And let me guess—you’re probably all electronic, right? Yet somehow, you still can’t figure out why the hell you have all these papers or where they’re even supposed to go.
Sound familiar? Don’t worry, —you’re not alone. Staying organized as a nurse leader is no small feat, but trust me, it’s possible.
Let’s talk about how you can take control, clear the clutter, and lead your facility with confidence.
Step 1: Identify What You and Your Team Should Be Doing
To stay organized as a nurse leader, you need to start with clarity.
I remember when I was a total paper hoarder—yep, I’m talking about piles of papers everywhere! I held onto everything, thinking, “Oh, I might need this later!” The reality? Most of it was unnecessary.
What worked for me was writing down every responsibility my team and I were handling and then breaking each task into manageable steps. From there, I decided:
What was truly important?
What could be discarded?
Everything needs a location—whether that’s in a folder, binder, or planner. If it doesn’t have a place, decide if it’s even worth keeping.
Step 2: Organize with Systems
When I first started, I went all-in on color-coded folders, and then I transitioned to color-coded binders.
Eventually, I created my own planner that included my daily, weekly, and monthly tasks in one spot.
Before that, I was drowning in sticky notes—literally everywhere. 😂 Now, I keep everything centralized in my planner, and let me tell you—it’s been a game changer.
Not only does this system keep me organized, but it has also significantly reduced my anxiety.
There’s nothing worse than having your administrator or regional request something, and you have no clue where it is.
Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s not a good feeling.
Why Organization Matters
As a nurse leader, your organization (or lack of it) sets the tone for your facility. How can you lead effectively if you’re scrambling to locate your own work?
5 Tips to Stay Organized as a Nurse Leader
Here are my top five tips to simplify your day and stay on top of your responsibilities:
Keep Your Desk Clear
A clutter-free desk equals a clutter-free mind.
Write Everything Down
Don’t rely on memory—get it all out on paper or into your planner.
Utilize the Director of Nursing Planner
This is my go-to tool for keeping all my tasks and goals in one place.
Delegate What Needs to Be Delegated
You don’t have to do everything yourself. Identify what can be handed off and shred the rest.
Stick to Your Systems
Whatever system works for you—folders, binders, or planners—stick to it and stay consistent.
