Alright... the survey is over. Now what?

So, the survey is finally over, huh?

Whether you’re breathing a sigh of relief or still reeling from the chaos, one thing’s for sure—being a Director of Nursing during survey time is no joke!

Now that the surveyors have packed up and left, you’re probably wondering,...

“What now?”

First off, take a few days off! No, seriously, I’m not asking—I’m telling you!

You might be tempted to dive straight into the post-survey aftermath, but trust me, you need to regroup, recharge, and refocus.

Why?

Because depending on how your survey went, you might have some serious work ahead to clear your re-visit, and you can’t do that if you’re running on fumes.

Step 1: Review the Survey Findings with a Clear Mind

After you’ve taken some well-deserved time off, it’s time to roll up your sleeves. Start by thoroughly reviewing the survey findings.

It’s crucial to understand exactly where your facility stands.

What were the major issues? Were there any surprises?

This isn’t the time to beat yourself up—use this as a learning opportunity.

A fresh perspective can turn those findings into actionable steps for improvement.

Step 2: Prioritize and Implement Your Plan

Once you’ve got a handle on the findings, it’s time to prioritize.

Not everything can be fixed overnight, so focus on the most critical areas first—those that directly impact resident care and safety.

Develop a clear, step-by-step plan to address these issues, and get your team on board.

Remember, you’re not in this alone—use the strengths of your team to tackle the challenges head-on.

And because I know you’re a busy person, I’ve put together a quick video to guide you through these post-survey steps.

You can watch it here.

So, there you have it.

The survey is done, but your work isn’t over just yet.

Take a deep breath, get some rest, and then get ready to show the world why you’re the best Director of Nursing out there.

You’ve got this!

Stay DON strong, stay focused, and stay fabulous!
