Boosting Morale: A Call to Celebrate the Beauty of Nursing

Boosting Morale: A Call to Celebrate the Beauty of Nursing

I don’t know about you, but lately, I’ve been seeing more negativity surrounding nursing, and it’s taken me aback.

In 2020, we were hailed as heroes. Today, it feels like we’re treated as zeros. Why is that?

Why does the negative always seem to outweigh the positive? Why aren’t there more stories about the beauty of healthcare, the beauty of nursing?

Negativity Feeds the Narrative

I can tell you why. I’ve lived it my entire life. As a Muslim, I’ve seen how one negative act tied to my faith leads to judgment of an entire community.

Now, I see the same happening to nursing.

We’ve seen stories of nurses being arrested, nurses attending non-accredited schools, or skipping licensure exams.

These isolated incidents dominate the conversation, overshadowing the majority of nurses who work tirelessly and ethically every single day.

And yet, the truth remains: there are far more good nurses than bad.

Finding the Beauty in Nursing Again

How do we rise above this negativity? How do we remind the world—and ourselves—of the beauty in nursing?

We do it by speaking up.

I challenge you to think about what you love about nursing. Why did you become a nurse? What moments make you proud to do this work?

Because I know we’ve all had those moments.

Moments like going home after a long day, only to jump up in the middle of the night thinking, “OMG, I forgot to get her water,” or remembering to bring in clothes for a resident or patient who didn’t have any.

Moments like going to visit a resident when they’re admitted to the hospital. Staying with them during their final moments.

Honoring them by attending their funerals.

These moments are what make nursing beautiful. They’re what show the world—and ourselves—that nursing is more than a profession. It’s a calling.

Celebrate the Good

We may not be able to speak for those who, unfortunately, have made mistakes or done things that don’t align with the values we hold dear.

But I am certain of one thing: there are far more of us who genuinely love what we do.

If no one has told you this lately: Thank you.

Thank you for showing up, for giving your heart, and for making a difference every single day.

A Call to Action

I challenge you: Speak up for what you love about nursing.

Tell your story. Share your why.

Together, let’s shift the narrative and show the world—and each other—the beauty in nursing again.
