From One DON to Another: The Heart and Hustle of Being a DON

I know there are times when you think you’ve chosen the wrong career.

Just when you feel like you’ve got it all figured out, here comes something else—a new regulation, a policy rollout, or a sudden issue that demands your attention.

I see how hard you work day in and day out to be the best version of yourself, not just for your team but for your residents too.

I want you to remember a few things as you navigate these challenges:

1. After the Storm, the Sun Will Shine.

Every storm eventually passes.

It might feel overwhelming when issues pile up, but trust that clarity and calm will return.

When you’re in the thick of it, take a moment to breathe and remind yourself that this is just a phase.

2. Celebrate Small Wins.

In the midst of putting out fires, it’s easy to feel like you

haven’t achieved anything all day.

But showing up for your team, offering support, and making decisions—these are all victories, no matter how small.

Keep a journal to note your daily accomplishments, however minor they may seem.

You’ll be surprised at how much you achieve!

3. You Are Not Alone.

I know you might not hear it often, but you are doing an amazing job.

Reach out to fellow DONs or colleagues; share your experiences and lean on one another for support.

Building a network of peers can provide fresh perspectives and encouragement.

4. Prioritize Self-Care.

Your well-being is crucial for you to lead effectively.

Schedule time for yourself, even if it’s just a quick walk or a few moments of mindfulness.

When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your team and residents.

5. Keep Learning.

Every challenge is an opportunity to grow.

Embrace new regulations and policies as chances to expand your knowledge and skill set.

Consider attending workshops or webinars that can enhance your leadership abilities and keep you informed about industry changes.

I want you to know that I see your dedication, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Each day, you show up with the will to thrive, and that’s what makes you an incredible leader.

I am proud of you, and I know that you have what it takes to navigate the ups and downs of this role.

From one DON to another, remember: you’re making a difference, even when it feels like you’re just putting out fires. Keep shining!
