The Chaos of Shift Change

You ever get that feeling of impending doom just waiting for everyone to show up for their shift?

My goodness, your girl definitely can relate.

Picture this: the scheduler is checking everyone in like they're waiting in line at the clinic, and you're over here holding your breath.

This process can be stressful enough, but let’s talk about when you go from waiting to the dreaded no call, no show. SMDH.

It’s 7 p.m. on Friday, it’s 95 degrees, ain’t got no staff and the rest trying to leave (LOL in my best Glorilla voice).

So, what do you do? Do you have a meltdown?

Beg and rob Peter to pay Paul, Patty, and the twins? (Yep, I threw in the twins—because that damn staffing mandate feels like an extra set of impossible expectations that no facility can meet!)

Here’s my advice: hire, hire, and hire some more.

Partner with a reliable staffing agency—and you know your girl has one, so hit me up if you need it!

Pro Tips for Surviving Shift Chaos

  1. Get That Signature: Have your staff sign off on every shift they pick up. It’s like a contract—once they sign, they know they’re locked in.

  2. Send Those Reminders: Send a little Hey boo hey text to remind them, "Don’t forget you’re on the schedule!" Sometimes, a friendly reminder goes a long way.

  3. Be Flexible: So, they can’t work 8 hours? Take the 4 they can work! God knows I don’t want to be on the medication cart for a double shift. Speaking of which…

  4. Last Sunday’s Shift: Guess who was on the cart last Sunday? Yep, your girl. I clocked 18.5 hours because my slow self was on that cart all day. LOL. But hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

It’s All Temporary

Here’s the thing—don’t sweat the small stuff. Handle what you can, and what you can’t?

Well, that’s where you learn to move on. Shift chaos is temporary, and so is the stress.

Keep your head up, stay flexible, and trust that you’ll make it through with your team by your side (and your sense of humor intact!).
