Yesterday marked my official last day running a medical unit at a correctional facility. Leaving wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one for me.
Let me tell you why: it wasn’t about the job itself—it was about who I was becoming in that environment.
When I first took on the role, I was eager and full of optimism.
The job itself wasn’t taxing, but the emotional and mental toll of the environment began to chip away at me.
My sister used to say, “You’re not correctional material,” and honestly, she was right.
While it was an incredible learning experience, I realized the environment was changing me in ways I didn’t like.
I found myself slipping into negativity, a far cry from my usual happy-go-lucky self.
I wasn’t paying attention to how I presented myself at work, and my attitude started to spiral.
I didn’t like the person I was becoming, and that was my wake-up call.
Leadership and Self-Reflection
In leadership positions, we often focus so much on others—our teams, our goals, and the work itself—that we forget to ask one crucial question: Who am I becoming in this role?
If you find yourself changing in ways that don’t align with your values or the person you aspire to be, it’s time to pause and reevaluate.
Leadership should empower you to grow, not diminish who you are.
For me, staying in that role meant losing sight of the person I want to be.
The environment wasn’t aligning with my goals or my future self, and I knew I needed to make a change.
Taking the Leap
Leaving a stable job is scary. Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, “What the hell did I just do?”
But I reminded myself that life isn’t always about money—it’s about living in alignment with your purpose.
I prayed about it, as I always do, and decided to move forward with faith.
Sometimes, you have to take risks to realign with your values and goals.

If you’re considering a role in corrections, I encourage you to try it. It’s not a bad position at all—it just wasn’t the right fit for me emotionally and mentally.
Everyone’s journey is different, and there’s always something to learn from every experience.
